Sariwang Hiwa (Fresh Cuts)
pyrography + mixed media on wood panels
16" X 20"

For a forthcoming group show "Tabi-tabi Po" in San Francisco

+ + +

I picked a generic manananggal for my subject because it's an interesting character onto which I could project my idea.

I deliberately used a woodburning technique (pyrography) to create my piece, it's similar to how early inhabitants of the Philippines write their literature.

A manananggal with earphones is hovering over her turntable lower half. A banner that says 'fresh cuts' floats above. This means "sariwang hiwa" in Filipino; a street slang term in reference to DJ'ing.

Old meets new.

My piece signifies the changing of time. Modernization is instrumental in killing our culture. There is a dwindling number of people who remember these creatures. In a way, I think their powers are declining because people don't believe in them anymore. They are just becoming a figment of one's imagination; fantasy: a pop culture reference.

It's not a matter of how good or bad these creatures are, whether they exist or not. For me it is important to remember their contribution to our rich culture. It's up to the individual to belie or believe.

As the old Filipino saying goes, "Ang taong 'di marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan" (A person who doesn't look back from where he came from cannot find his way forward.) THAT, I believe.

The Endless Pursuit of a Pastiche-Maker Extra-Ordinary
Marcushiro

+  +  +

pastiche [pæˈstiːʃ], pasticcio [pæˈstɪtʃəʊ]
n
1. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Art Terms) a work of art that mixes styles, materials, etc.
2. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Art Terms) a work of art that imitates the style of another artist or period
[French pastiche, Italian pasticcio, literally: piecrust (hence, something blended), from Late Latin pasta paste1]
3. (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Art Terms) potpourri or hotchpotch; an opera made up of various pieces; a picture based on another’s  design or style.

- - -

Trying to get inside Marcushiro's mind is like walking leisurely on a straight path that suddenly leads you to a lot of detours. For him, diversity always gets the job done but it always comes with dilemmas, contradiction and confusion. He's made time management (or mismanagement) of his different artistic disciplines an artform.

"I continue to make art because it challenges me. This was my conclusion after a long, hard fought battle deciphering what keeps me going".

Set up to finally address on which path he's going to take his art, this show deals with a lot of personal questions and issues the artist is going through.  In some ways it also tackles every single factor in staging a solo show. Each piece signifies every single factor. The artist, the patron, the critique, the guests, the uninvited, artist's peers, the gallery and the aftermath.

In his third solo offering, Marcushiro continues his pursuit of true art. It still involves combining all the things that inspires him—his love for illustration, design, music, pop culture, strange things, collecting beautiful garbage, his love for Cubao and street-inspired ephemera all piled into a one big mess.

Perhaps he's finally found his true art, but it turns out to be the start of a bigger mess to come.

- - -

Marcushiro loves art, music & all the grime and beauty of Cubao.
He is one half of the strange creators for the design studio, Electrolychee.
A pastiche-maker, he loves to dabble on different art disciplines and is an avid collector of fine junk. He also plays and write syrupy songs with his band Bagetsafonik & the groovy head-bobbin' Corporate Lo-Fi.

See more of his works at Electrolychee.com & Marcushiro.multiply.com for other whatnots.
He won't stop, 'cause he can't stop.

Let's support this benefit concert tonight. I suggest that you bring a survival pack consisting of water, 2 canned goods, 2 noodles, and biscuits rather that paying 100 bucks. Para instant tulong na. No need for people to buy the goods for you. But hey, if you can spare more, THE BETTER. Your hundred bucks can buy medicines etc.

Let's all pitch in guys. Every ounce of help goes a long way.
